Glaucoma happens when pressure inside the eye is elevated and causes damage to the structure that connects the back of the eye and the brain. This structure is called the optic nerve. Glaucoma is painless and affects the peripheral vision first, in severe cases it can start to encroach on your central visual acuity and cause someone to go blind.
In addition to providing lasik and laser vision correction, we diagnose and treat glaucoma. Generally speaking glaucoma is a contraindication to lasik or PRK. During your initial exam for consideration of lasik or laser vision correction the doctor will check you eyes and make sure you don't have glaucoma or any other ocular condition that may be a contraindication to having the surgery.
In the event you are diagnosed with glaucoma we can take great care of your eyes. Both Dr. Benjamin and Dr. Matthew are skilled at treating glaucoma. Usually treatment begins with drops to lower eye pressure. Treatment rarely needs to be escalated to a surgical treatment for glaucoma. At Eye Doctors of Arizona - Lasik Center of Phoenix our surgeons utilize the latest surgical techniques for glaucoma including MIGS(Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery).
When someone is suffering from glaucoma our goal is to preserve vision. Unfortunately, once damage is done it cannot regenerate. Regardless, if you are an early diagnosis or an advanced case our goal is to save what vision you have.
Once we have ensured that you do not have glaucoma we can then consider your lasik surgery at Lasik Center of Phoenix.
