Dry Eye is common especially in this hot, dry environment we live in.
Common symptoms include foreign body sensation, blurry vision, fluctuating vision. Over the counter artificial tears can be helpful but many times it is not enough.
Dry is a complex multifactorial condition which may include chronic eyelid infection(blepharitis), evaporative or underproduction of the water part of the tears sometimes in correlation with chronic medical conditions conditions like Lupus, or Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Previously mentioned in our website information one important consideration to improve the chronic blepharitis is a dry eye heat compress. It functions to improve secretion of the oil part of the tears and in turn stabilize the water part of the tears.
The warm compress is Dr. Heller's #1 recommendation for dry eye.
After that Dr. Matthew Heller's recommendation for artificial tears is preservative free Systane, Refresh, or Blink.
Dr. Heller also has a treatment regimen that may include the following:
-NSAID(Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatroy) eye drops such as ketorolac, or bromday
-Steroids(Typically used short term)
-Restasis
-Xiidra
-Tea Tree Oil Preparations for Demodex
-Anti-allergic eye drops such as Zaditor, Alaway, or Patanol
-Antibiotics such Tobramycin, Erythromycin, Ofloxacin, or Doxycycline
If you are considering lasik, laser, vision correction and you have dry eyes. You may be a candidate. Rarely dry eye may prohibit you from having lasik/laser eye surgery.
